How do I know my entry is confirmed?

Once you have completed your online entry form you will receive an automatic confirmation email. Please keep this as proof of entry.

If you do not receive this email please contact the Event Director at

Will I receive any other information before the event?

Yes you will. A comprehensive Competitor Briefing will be emailed to all competitors one week prior to the event and will also be available for download here on the WSS website. The briefing will detail all the information you’ll need to take part including the event schedule, information on the course and support services as well as local Mooloolaba information and site maps.

Can I enter this event on event day?

Yes you can, however only a limited amount of entries will be available on the day and a late entry fee will apply.

I have never done an organised paddle race – is this event only for elite competitors?

The 5.0km Paddle Race is open to every ability and we have different categories so you’re alongside paddlers of a similar ability.

When you enter, there is an Open Wave (competitive paddlers) and Mates Wave (social paddlers).  It’s up to you which wave start group you want to enter into.

I’ve never paddled in big surf – is there an option to avoid this the waves and stay on flat water?

Yes there is.  All paddlers in the Open Wave will finish at the Event Site on Mooloolaba Beach, so they are likely to have a wave to negotiate when they get close to shore.

Paddlers who enter in the Mates Wave will start and finish in the same location at The Spit.  This is sheltered from the surf and an easy location to mount and discount your board or ski.

If the weather gods are kind to us and there is little or no swell, all paddle categories will finish at the Event Site on Mooloolaba Beach.

Are wetsuits permitted in this ocean swim?

Yes they are, but only for swimmers entering into our Mates Wave.  Wetsuits are not permitted for swimmers in the Open Wave who are competing for overall prizes and prizemoney.

Wetsuits are not typically allowed in many ocean swimming events however they are a great buoyancy aid that offer assistance to inexperienced or less confident ocean swimmers.

If you’re swimming in our Mates Wave, the decision to wear a wetsuit / speed suit / tri suit is entirely up to you.

I haven’t done a lot of swimming in the ocean – is this event achievable for less experienced swimmers?

Most definitely. Each event in the World Series Swims has options to cater for all abilities.

There is no hiding the fact that ocean swimming is more challenging than a length in your local pool, but we have taken a number of measures and designed the courses to be challenging but achievable for all abilities and fitness levels.

If you are new to ocean swimming, try our 800m Short Course event and build towards a longer distance at Coolangatta on May 13.

Where & When is Pack Collection?

Pack Collection will take place at the Mooloolaba Surf Club (Level 1). Refer to the Event Program for final times

Is there a time restriction to complete the event?

Yes there is.  The following time restrictions will be enforced to ensure the safety of all competitors.  Any swimmer yet to round the final turn will be assisted by water safety personnel.  However, we do love to see every swimmer cross the finish line, so we prefer not to intervene if a swimmer is within 200m of the beach finish and is still swimming comfortably.

  • 1.6km – 1 hour
  • 2.5km – 1 hour 30 minutes
  • 5.0km – 2 hours

Are wave starts used?

Yes they are. A mass start is a lot of fun, but we want to ensure that those around you on the start line are of a similar ability. Two wave group options are available and you get to choose.

  • Open Wave (Competitive)
  • Mates Wave (Social)

**Wave starts do not apply for Junior Giants event. Wave groups may also be split into male and female groups depending on the level of entries in each event.
