Boat Hire

If you’re traveling from outside Queensland, then boat hire is an option.  It is, however, an expensive option for Solo swimmers who need a boat and skipper – this option may be more viable for teams who can absorb the hire costs together, or swimmers who have their own skipper and can simply ‘dry hire’ the boat.

2021 will be the inaugural event, so boat hire companies may not be familiar with the event.   It’s important that you discuss the course with them and select a boat that is capable of an offshore voyage.  Some hire companies may only have inshore vessels, for use in the Gold Coast Broadwater.

Remember, you need a Support Boat AND Skipper, so please discuss the skipper requirements with them as well.

Bringing your own qualified Skipper will certainly help reduce the overall costs.

Boat Hire Contacts

Below are local hire companies who have suitable boats and are familiar with the event. Please advise them if you DO NOT need a skipper, as they will assume you require a boat and skipper for the day.

Please contact them directly to discuss rates and requirements.

Surf Clubs

Surf Club IRBs (Inflatable Rescue Boats) are approved for use by Solo, Tandem Solos and Duo Teams (NOT Teams of Four), so Surf Clubs throughout the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast may be able to assist.

Things to Consider

  • Support Boats need to be in position 30 minutes before their swimmers Wave Start (Solo Wave: 6:30am) and the journey from the Southport Spit Boat Ramp is approx 30km
  • Every skipper must attend the Safety Briefing before the event (Thurs or Fri).  If you are chartering a vessel and Skipper, the Skipper of that vessel will need to attend
  • Your swimming speed will determine how long you will be in the water with your Support Boat. Consider this timeframe when planning your hire period.
  • There is no boat ramp at Surfers Paradise where you finish (it’s a surf beach), so your Skipper will depart for their preferred exit ramp when you reach the Finish Lane (final 500m)
